Former sheriff Ben Stride follows the seven men who occupied Wells Fargo's office and killed his wife. Steep agony is the fact that the fact that he did not leave his job alone was the reason for his wife's work in the express office and is therefore partly responsible for her death. Stride meets a couple on the way west to California and helps them. On the way, two N'er-Do-Wells come in, Masters and Clete, who know that Stride chases thieves from express offices.
